The list has been made, the shopping has begun and Band Aid has become a familiar song in our lives once more. It can only mean one thing: Christmas is coming! However, all too often the festive season can put many employees and some employers, on Santa's naughty list as a result of their behaviour at office Christmas parties or failure to address Christmas party problems.
Here are some handy hints to think about before heading off to the office party and to let you get off on the right festive footing:
- Remember you are still an employee regardless of whether you are out of the office for a work lunch or dinner, or in the office at an event. Some people seem to forget this and think their obligations as an employee go out the window at social events such as Christmas parties. As such, employees should continue to behave in a reasonable manner at all events.
- Getting into fights, drinking too much or behaving inappropriately at office Christmas parties will still mean you will be subject to the employer's disciplinary and grievance policies on your return to work. Employees should keep this in mind before heading off to their party.
- It is advisable to take some time off in accordance with your employer's holiday procedure if you want the day off after a midweek party so as to not have to turn up tired and with a sore head to the office!
- As should be the case at all times, it is important to respect people's boundaries at office parties. No one should be made to feel uncomfortable because of the way other people are acting, nor should anyone feel pressurised into drinking alcohol.
- Remember not to make anyone upset or harassed as a consequence of inappropriate behaviour or banter. It is everyone's party and they should be able to enjoy the event as much as you.
By keeping these points in mind, employees and employers can hopefully get through the festive season without a hitch with only the tinsel and fairy lights to deal with!
